Last year, Houffalize inaugurated its brand new Four Cross Track during a NISSAN UCI Class 1 Race. Designed by Phil Saxena, the world specialist in this field, its layout has enjoyed such a success that it is already included on the World Cup Calendar. With its finals, women and men, taking place at night, let’s bet that the world elite will be able to delight, or even impress, the numerous spectators who like to meet, year after year, in the Belgian capital of Mountain Bike.

The track, which required several weeks of work, was traced directly on the edge of the cross-country circuit on the breathtaking slopes of the Ourthe, precisely on the Sertomont Hill, only a few hundreds meters away from the centre of the city. A site which, with the technical descent of the Fire Brigade, was also the great innovation of the latest edition of the “World Cup”.
The bicycles are extremely resistant. Nevertheless they present a lower wheel travel compared to the free ride bicycle as a certain nervousness is essential. In fact, the pilot pedal nearly during the whole competition, which is not the case in a downhill competition. The front wheel travel lies between 80 and 120 mm whereas the rear wheel travel lies between 0 mm (i.e. for half-rigid bicycles) and 120 mm. Although the track is made of jumps, it is absolutely not necessary to try special jums. The objective consists in being the first com-petitor to cross the finish line.
The Four Cross (ou 4X) is a tremendously spectacular discipline which triggers a media hype. It is disputed on a 400 to 700 meters long track going downhill made of jumps (camels, tables, dromedaries, flat jumps), bumps, steep bends and cants… The pilots first run an individually timed qualification descent before competing in groups of four according to a results table taking the times into account. The first two pilots of each leg are qualified for the next one and so on until the small final and the final. The pilots who are eliminated in the quarter-final are ranked at the 9th and 16th positions. The qualities required are : explosivity at the start, the capacity of overcoming obstacles and of mastering the trajectories, and the ability to stand the direct confrontation with the other competitors where one has to be quite daring.
